Year of Mercy Habitat for Humanity House

Pope Francis has given us this wonderful jubilee Year of Mercy as a time to renew ourselves in the incredible mercy of God and to encourage us to share that mercy with all the world.  As part of the celebration of the Year of Mercy the Holy Father has encouraged us to practice the corporal works of mercy.

The parishes of the Dubuque Deanery – including our four parishes – have decided to act upon Shelter the Homeless by working together to build a Habitat for Humanity House in Dubuque.  The house will be called the House of Mercy in honor of this wonderful year.

How can you help?

  • Pray: Prayer for the safe and successful completion of this project are certainly necessary.
  • Work: Each parish – including each of our parishes – will be assigned a Saturday to provide laborers to build the house. We hope to begin work on the house in early May – weather permitting.  The concrete work, electrical and plumbing will be done by contractors.  We will be involved in building the house structure.  Typically 10-20 workers are needed.  Normally work begins at 8:00 a.m. and ends around 3:00 p.m. on Saturday.  Workers need to be at least 14 years old, and teenagers need to have an adult supervisor.  No particular skills are needed to work on the house.  We will be notified 2-3 weeks before our scheduled Saturday work day and will then contact volunteers to help build the house.  We will most likely have a couple of assigned work days throughout the summer.  If you would like to be on a worker contact list please call the parish office.
  • Food: The Saturday that our parish provides workers we will also need to provide them with a lunch. Volunteers will be needed to cook and deliver the lunch to the worksite.  Typically sandwiches (sloppy joes), chips, fruit and a drink is provided.  The workers tend not to be fussy.  They simply need a generous amount of food and drink. We will be notified 2-3 weeks before our scheduled Saturday work day and will then contact volunteers to help build the house.  If you would like to be on a lunch contact list please call the parish office.
  • Donations: The parishes need to raise money for all of the building supplies for the house (lumber, shingles, drywall, paint, cabinets, fixtures, etc.). Any donations can be made out to the parish with “House of Mercy” in the Memo line.

A family has not yet been selected to live in the house.  Applicants need to be approved by Habitat for Humanity and must contribute significant hours in helping to build the house.

We are excited about this project of mercy during this jubilee year, and we look forward to your participation in building a House of Mercy!

The Year of Mercy

Pope Francis has called for a special jubilee year – the Year of Mercy.  The Year of Mercy begins December 8, 2015 and ends November 20, 2016.  This is a special year for us to grow in faith.  In particular, the Holy Father wants us to experience God’s mercy in a profound way during this year, and share that mercy with others.  Please watch the bulletin and our website to keep informed of our activities during the jubilee year.  To learn more about the Year of Mercy please visit the Year of Mercy website or the Archdiocese of Dubuque website.
